This so-called “default tool dynamic” implies that most AI users have selected a generic AI tool they’ll use first for any project, even if it’s not always the best tool for the job, according to a Menlo Ventures poll of 5,000 individuals.
According to the research, ChatGPT is the AI helper that 28% of respondents prefer over default tools. Next in line are Apple’s Siri at 16%, Meta AI and Amazon’s Alexa at 18%, and Google’s Gemini at 23%. An additional 33% is made up of various tools like Claude, Grok, and Perplexity combined.
According to Menlo Ventures, some of that is “first-mover advantage,” since programs like ChatGPT have gained popularity by being the first to provide certain chatbot and image-generation capabilities. However, the business cautions that “that position is not guaranteed,” as competitors are swiftly gaining ground.
“The consumer market for [large language models] is still nascent and far from saturated,” according to the study, “leaving ample room for product innovation to shift market share over time.”
